SPOTLIGHT STORIES
Norwood Middle School's May Rising Student Star is Na'Zanie Martin

Norwood Middle School is recognizing 7th grader Na'Zanie Martin as May's Rising Star Student. Na'Zanie is a hard, dedicated worker. She always strives to do her best inside and outside of the classroom. She is determined, motivated and humble. During her first year at the middle school, she has maintained A/B honor roll and has only missed one day of school. She has been an active member on the school basketball and track teams. Mrs. Harvey is honored to have Na'Zanie as a student in her math classroom. Na'Zanie enjoys math and plans on taking Algebra in the 8th grade. Outside of school Na'Zanie volunteers to rake and cut grass for her neighbors in the community. Ms. Maglecic is extremely proud of Na'Zanie for focusing on her studies. Na'Zanie has high expectations for herself. After high school she would like to play basketball at UC and study to become a veterinarian. Norwood Middle School is proud to have students like Na'Zanie and she is one of the reasons Norwood Middle School is great! Way to go Na'Zanie!

Norwood Middle School's May Rising Staff Star is Mrs. Cara Westerman

Mrs. Westerman serves as a Norwood Middle School teacher. She goes the extra mile to provide community opportunities for her students such as banking, shopping, riding the bus and many other important life skills. Mrs. Westerman shines when it comes to finding a way for her students to be successful. She is particularly skilled at using technology. Mrs. Collopy shared that Mrs. Westerman is a problem solver. She's the best at reaching out and utilizing resources to provide for her students. Recently Mrs. Westerman was interested in providing a prom corsage for one of her students so she asked Mrs. Blackburn, our school librarian to make a corsage for the student. Mrs. Westerman is fantastic at allowing colleagues to connect ultimately resulting in allowing all of us to be supportive of her work. With a colleague, Mrs. Westerman also developed a curriculum for multi-handicapped students. It is amazing people like Mrs. Westerman that make our school great. Congratulations Mrs. Westerman !

Norwood Middle School's May Rising Volunteer Star is Derek Alsip
Derek Alsip is Norwood Middle School's Rising Star Volunteer for the month of May. After graduating from Norwood in 2005, Derek went on to wrestle and study psychology at Campbellsville University. He was a fierce wrestler at both Norwood and Campbellsville. After graduatng with his Bachelor's Degree in December, Derek moved back to Norwood and started coaching wrestling at Norwood Middle School. After a phenomenal season this year, students on the team had a drive to continue to improve their skills. Derek had a vision for this and created the postseason Indians Wrestling Group. The Indians Wrestling Group meets on Mondays and Wednesdays to lift weights, condition, practice wrestling techniques and run circuits. The group brings in anywhere from 3 to 15 dedicated wrestlers who understand that hard work pays off. Through this group and the help of Derek, many of the wrestlers have been able to compete in off-season tournaments. Derek dedicates not only his time but his personal money to ensure the wrestling program is successful. He believes in giving back and investing in his community. Norwood Middle School appreciates all that Derek does for their students. It is volunteers like Derek Alsip that make Norwood Middle School great ! Congratulations Derek !

8th grade summer reading list

 Summer 2013

Dear Students and Parents,

Reading is an important part of every student’s education.  Your summer reading list has been designed to enable you to read for both information and pleasure.  Please read two non-fiction selections and two fiction selections.

All of the books on the list tie into what you will be studying as an 8th grade student.  You will be asked to draw upon your knowledge of these texts often.  You will find the connections to be helpful throughout the year as well as when you begin preparing for the 8th grade Ohio Achievement Assessment.  Copies of all the books can be found at the Norwood Public Library and for purchase at Joseph Beth Booksellers.  You may also consult with 8th grade reading teachers Mrs. Lillard and Mrs. Bose.
