Competition Recognizes Community’s Efforts to Reduce High School Dropout Rates

October 12, 2011 Norwood, Ohio— Norwood achieved national recognition as one of America’s Promise Alliance’s 100 Best Communities for Young People presented by ING for its initiatives to help young people. The competition recognizes communities across the country that focus on reducing high school dropout rates and providing service and support to their youth.

Norwood, a two-time 100 Best winner, continues to make young people a priority by developing initiatives to reduce the dropout rate, support youth activism and offer a range of educational programs. Over the past decade, the community has increased its graduation rate by 13 percent and has focused students on post-graduate goals by filling the high school walls with college banners, photos of alumni who went to college and posters about post-secondary studies and careers.

Norwood schools are also committed to offering a range of services to students of all ages including a Freshman Academy to help ninth graders with the difficult transition to high school. Local schools are using a 21st Century Learning Grant to expand services—including 70 different clubs—to elementary, middle and high school students. The community also engages students to prevent bullying and teach tolerance. This year, students from the high schools Gay/Straight Alliance sponsored a Stop Hate marketing campaign.

Norwood City Schools Partners with UC for Tri-State STEM Education
The Cincinnati Engineering Enhanced Mathematics and Science Program (CEEMS)  is  awarded a $9.2 million grant to develop and implement courses in partnership with local high schools to improve STEM education.  Through CEEMS, UC continues to provide leadership in engineering and STEM education locally, regionally, and state wide.

We are pleased to announce Norwood City Schools will be a partner school district in a grant that UC was awarded this year.  It is a large grant opportunity and we are one of the partnering school districts along with CPS, Oak Hills, Princeton, Rural Clermont County STEMConsortium of nine school districts and Winton Woods.  The overall goal of CEEMS is to train a cadre of middle and high school teachers capable of using engineering as a context to teach math and science over the next five years.

The grant allows for strong PD and university programming for teachers interested at the middle school and high school level.
Teachers can choose from, a master in curriculum and instruction (CI) degree with engineering education (MCIEE) specialization, a summer institute for teachers (SIT),  an education pathway with licensure for engineering (EPLE) majors, and an engineering education pathway for career changers (EEPCC). Each pathway has key courses that are focused on science and engineering, content and design, and challenge based teaching.
