High School Highlights: Year 3 in Review
GEAR UP Norwood Year 3 included many awesome events and new projects, including:
College Visits: Students attended over 10 college visits, including visits to Wright State University, Miami University, Mount St. Joseph, University of Cincinnati Clifton and Blue Ash Campuses and Northern Kentucky University, just to name a few! Be on the lookout this fall for our new calendar of visits and plan to attend. It is never too early to start thinking about your postsecondary options!
Service Chiefs: GEAR UP believes in the importance of giving back to the community, so this year a new student group was formed, the Norwood High School Service Chiefs. Projects included creating care packages for foster kids and home safety kits for Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. If you have a passion for service, please see GEAR UP to get involved!
Freshmen Ignite Program: The transition from middle to high school is not easy. To offer support, 20 upperclassmen served as mentors to all 9th grade students each Friday to help them be successful. We have a great group of mentors ready to serve the Class of 2021 this fall!
Naviance ACT Test Prep: All NHS students have access to an awesome ACT prep program that includes hundreds of practice questions, lessons, a diagnostic test, and full practice exams. GEAR UP designed a 9-week custom study plan to help our juniors prepare for their statewide ACT exam last March. We are always available for one-on-one ACT prep, just come to the loft and make an appointment!
Lunch and Learn Series: This year students were given the opportunity to spend their lunch with a broad range of career professionals, including a dental hygienist, a pilot, an accountant, a chemist, an engineer, and a veterinarian. We look forward to exploring even more careers next year.
Middle School Moments: Year 3
GEAR-UP at Norwood Middle School really dove into career exploration with the students and started the conversation about postsecondary options! Some highlights from the year include:
Dave Ramsey Personal Finance Curriculum: through Social Studies classes throughout the year, all 7th and 8th graders were introduced to awesome lessons to help them understand and start taking ownership of their personal finances--an invaluable life skill!
College Visits: GEAR UP had the pleasure of taking the 7th grade to Wright State University during the fall for an admissions presentation, a tour of campus and to enjoy lunch. In the spring, our 8th grade class visited Northern Kentucky University-Go Norse! For many students, it was their first time on a college campus. GEAR UP cannot wait to explore more campuses with them in the future!
Career Exploration: GEAR UP worked with the 7th and 8th graders to explore different career paths through several projects, workshops, and events! In December, students experienced our 1st Annual "Get your Career in GEAR" Day, where local professionals came to NMS to share their work. Students also utilized Naviance throughout the year to complete various assessments to help them find their right fit! For our 8th graders, the culmination of their work was displayed during the Career Dinner where they shared their career projects with family.
